Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about pitching us a piece? Start here. The answers below cover what most contributors want to know before they reach out. If you'd like the fuller picture, our complete contributor guidelines go into more depth, and you can come back to pitch when you're ready.

What does the illūminātum publish?

Critique, not coverage. We're interested in pieces that engage with what a body of work means, what's at stake in it, and what photography gains by taking it seriously. Reviews that argue, essays that develop a position, profiles that examine practice rather than personality. We're not the right home for news roundups, exhibition announcements, or "five photographers to watch" lists. Other publications do that work well; we'd rather complement it than repeat it.

Who can contribute?

Anyone 18 years old or older who takes photography seriously. Writers, photographers, critics, curators, working artists, academics, and people who don't fit any of those labels but have something to say. We don't ask for credentials or publication history at submission. What matters is the work you're proposing and the thinking behind it.

How long should my article be?

Most pieces we publish run 1,500 to 2,000 words, which gives an argument room to develop and a conclusion room to land. That said, we welcome shorter pieces too. Some ideas are exactly the right length at 800 words. Others are the start of something longer, and we'll happily pitch a related idea back if a short piece sparks one.

Do I pitch first or send a finished piece?

Pitching first is the path we prefer, mostly because it saves you the work of writing something we may not be the right home for. A pitch of two or three paragraphs (the idea, the angle you'll take, why it fits) is enough to start a conversation. That said, if you've already written the piece, send it. We'll read it. The response just takes a bit longer.

Where do I send things?

Through the form on this page. It handles both pitches and finished drafts.

How long until I hear back?

Within a week for a pitch, within two weeks for a finished draft. If you haven't heard from us in that window, drop a note to submissions@the-illuminatum.com. Things occasionally slip through, and a follow-up is welcome rather than imposing.

Is there compensation?

Not for open submissions at this stage. the illūminātum is an independent editorial publication built and funded by its publisher, and pieces that come to us through the contribute page are volunteer contributions. We're direct about the compensation question from the start because it matters: you should pitch knowing what the publication can and can't offer in return for your work. What we can offer is editorial care, a thoughtful readership, and a home for criticism that takes itself seriously.

Do I have to pay to submit?

No. We will never ask you to pay for inclusion in our regular editorial and feature pages. We are not a vanity press.

What about fees for competitions?

Competitions have a separate submission path with different processes, different deadlines, and may include entry fees. When a competition opens, full details will be published separately.

Who keeps the copyright?

You do. Copyright stays with the contributor in all cases. We publish your piece; you keep the rights to it.

Can I publish the piece elsewhere too?

Yes. Republication is free and you don't need our permission. We just ask that you let us know when a piece is accepted elsewhere, whether before or after publication with us. The notification helps with proper attribution and the technical side of how search engines handle the same piece appearing in two places. That handling is to your benefit as much as ours.

What about image rights, AI, and inclusive language?

These are areas where the full thinking matters more than a quick answer can carry. For our positions on image reproduction rights, on AI as a writing tool, and on the language critique uses, please see our complete contributor guidelines.
